When to refer out for plagiocephaly

Hi! Plagiocephaly question: I have a friend whose almost 6 month old has right sided flattening. She noticed it at 4 months, and had been hoping it would resolve, but just texted me about it. How long can you give play positions before wanting to investigate helmet? I made some play recommendations, but I’m primarily a school PT so don’t know specifics on timing of referrals.

Hi, I would refer for a helmet assessment right away. 5 months is generally on the later side of when you can make a difference without a helmet. Once they start rolling play positions won’t make a difference other than not making it worse. They need to be able to have pressure on the opposing side to change shape. Hope that helps. Happy to answer more questions!
