We can’t figure out if my 3 year old son is a righty or lefty and seems to be struggling w tracing. What can we do?
HI there, welcome! In some kids, a clear dominance doesn’t emerge until around 5 years old (give or take). We do often see a hand preference though. Keep presenting items in the midline and see which hand your little one frequently uses. Feeding is also a functional task in which we see a hand preference.
As far as tracing is concerned, I wouldn’t push it. At 3 year old I would focus on building gross motor skill and strength (climbing, running, jumping etc) and also building up the small muscles in the hands with play dough, games that use tongs (like bed bugs), and other age appropriate manipulative. Hope this helps!
