Hyperactive kids

Hello,
Thank you for sharing such good content.
Any suggestions for when you have a child who is hyperactive?
My 4yr is very energetic and rarely sits still…even watching a show he is climbing and jumping around.
Best regards

Hi! And welcome to our community! I have found a few things to help with really energetic kids.
Calming music, dimmer lighting and deep pressure/weight bearing activities. Things like wheelbarrow walking, bear walking, log rolling.

Slow deep breathing can also work really well.

Also, after lots of heavy activity outdoors, running, biking, does your child get calmer or more hyeractive? Some kids need to let out lots of energy through movement while others get riled up by too much. Knowing that can help determine what your can look like to help keep the energy a little lower

What do you do with children who are more riled up with increased activity? We have a 4.5yo who is in OT, but it seems to be making her hyperactivity/sensory seeking behavior worse. Is there literature or any information someone could point me to that supports that thought??
Thanks!!

Hey @MamaBZ4- there are many kids who become overly excited with certain types of activities and children respond differently to various sensory experiences. For example, jumping on a trampoline or doing somersaults can create more excitement in the body while deep pressure, yoga, and dim lighting can would be more calming. Have you discussed with the OT what you’re noticing after the sessions? Perhaps s/he can end the sessions with more calming input to see if that changes the after-effects.

@tots-mary reads tons of books on this topic and will definitely have good recommendations for you.
